How to Make Homemade Natural Soaps Using Herbs and Other Natural Ingredients

In a world where synthetic chemicals dominate store shelves, more people are turning back to nature for gentler, healthier options. One of the most rewarding DIY ventures is making your own herbal soap — a craft that combines self-care, natural healing, and sustainability. Whether you're looking to soothe sensitive skin, treat acne naturally, or simply enjoy a chemical-free cleanse, herbal soaps are a beautiful blend of tradition and wellness.

In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of natural soap, popular herbs to use, and a simple recipe to get you started.

๐ŸŒฟ Why Choose Homemade Herbal Soaps?

1. Chemical-Free:
Commercial soaps often contain sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances. Herbal soaps let you skip the irritants.

2. Skin-Loving Ingredients:
Natural oils like coconut, olive, and avocado nourish the skin, while herbs bring in healing, anti-inflammatory, or detoxifying properties.

3. Customizable:
You get to choose the ingredients based on your skin type and scent preference. Perfect for sensitive, dry, oily, or acne-prone skin.

4. Eco-Friendly:
Homemade soaps reduce plastic waste and avoid pollutants that harm water ecosystems.

๐ŸŒฑ Best Herbs for Natural Soap Making

Here are some popular skin-loving herbs to include in your homemade soap:

Herb Skin Benefits

Moringa Rich in antioxidants, brightens skin
Guava Leaves Fights bacteria, helps with acne
Soursop Leaves Soothes irritated skin
Akapulco (Ringworm Bush) Antifungal and antibacterial
Gotu Kola Supports skin healing, anti-aging
Rosemary Improves circulation and has antibacterial properties
Turmeric Brightens and helps with hyperpigmentation
Chamomile Calms sensitive or dry skin

Tip: You can use these herbs as dried powders, infused oils, or decoctions (herbal teas).

๐Ÿงผ Basic Herbal Soap Recipe (Cold Process)

Ingredients:

300g coconut oil
300g palm oil or lard
150g olive oil or avocado oil
130g distilled water
65g sodium hydroxide (NaOH / lye)
2 tbsp dried moringa or guava leaves (powdered or steeped)
1 tsp turmeric powder (optional)
1 tbsp kaolin clay (for silkiness)
10 drops peppermint or lavender essential oil
1 tsp glycerin (optional for extra moisture)
Optional: 1 tsp sugar (for better lather), 1/2 tsp salt (for hardness)

Instructions:

1. Safety First: Wear gloves, goggles, and work in a well-ventilated space.

2. Lye Solution: Slowly pour the NaOH into the distilled water (never the other way around). Stir until dissolved. Let it cool.

3. Melt Oils: In a stainless steel pot, melt solid oils. Once melted, add the liquid oils.

4. Combine & Mix: When both the oils and the lye solution are around 38–42°C, slowly mix the lye solution into the oils.

5. Blend: Use an immersion blender until the mixture reaches "trace" (like thin pudding).

6. Add Herbs & Extras: Stir in herbal powders, clay, essential oils, and other additives.

7. Mold & Cure: Pour into soap molds, cover, and let sit for 24–48 hours. Unmold and cure for 4–6 weeks in a cool, dry place.

๐ŸŒธ Tips for Success

Use dried herbs to avoid mold.
Herbal infused oils (e.g., moringa-infused coconut oil) provide better skin absorption.
Always run your recipe through a lye calculator to ensure safety.
Add natural colorants like turmeric, spirulina, or cocoa powder for beautiful soap hues.

๐ŸŒฟConclusion
Making your own herbal soaps is more than a hobby — it’s a lifestyle rooted in natural living, creativity, and self-care. With every bar, you're nourishing your skin with the goodness of herbs and natural oils while cutting out unnecessary chemicals.
